The Columbus Crew’s lackluster performance in the first round of the MLS playoffs led to an unexpectedly early end to the season that left many fans feeling disappointed. While the poor finish is hard to swallow for the Crew faithful, it may be a result of the teams recent successes.
A Grueling Season
The Crew’s strong performance throughout last season meant they played more games than many other teams this season. The extra matches through the CONCACAF Champions Cup final run, Leagues Cup championship, & Campeones Cup game, on top of the grueling MLS regular season schedule provided fans with numerous thrilling moments and victories to celebrate.
However, its likely that this very match congestion and demanding schedule ultimately took a toll on the players. The tired legs may well have been the biggest factor contributing to the Crew's demise.
Tactical Challenges
In their playoff match against the New York Red Bulls, the Crew faced a familiar opponent whose high-pressing style disrupted their usual game plan. The Crew were unable to handle the pressure through two straight matches and bombed out of the playoffs. While the result was not what fans had hoped for, it’s a reminder of the tactical challenges that are needed in high-stakes matches. The team now has valuable insights to build on for future encounters.
Reflecting on Achievements
Despite the early playoff exit, the Crew’s season was filled with highlights - including the clubs first continental cup. Their ability to compete at a high level and secure important wins throughout the season is something to be proud of. Though it may take a moment for riled fans to come to this conclusion.
Moving Forward
As we look ahead, it’s clear that the Columbus Crew has many questions to answer. By addressing the lessons learned from this season and making necessary adjustments, the team can be well-positioned for greater success in the future. Fans can expect some changes to the roster as the team looks to strengthen key areas and bring in fresh talent. The club will likely make key decisions on whether to keep players like Marino Hinestroza, Matan, JRR, Dejuan Jones and others. And there may be a few big names on the move including Cucho and coach Nancy, who has had interest from France. It's a tall task for first time GM Issa Tall and the front office to make the right roster adjustments and aim to enhance the squad’s depth and versatility.
Until roster decisions and additional are announced, fans are left to wonder what could have been in 2024. It's only four months until next season...
