Columbus Signings Shine in Dream Debuts
The Columbus Crew faced Sporting Kansas City in the Leagues Cup round of 32 at Lower.com Field on Friday and, much like their last meeting in June, dominated with a commanding 4-0 victory. Diego Rossi set the tone by scoring in the first half and then doubled the lead with his second of the night before the substitutes took the field.
DeJuan Jones made a sensational Crew debut, finding the back of the net just 30 seconds after entering the match for the team’s third goal in the 77th minute. Dylan Chambost, another debutant, sealed the deal, delivering the final blow to SKC’s Leagues Cup hopes just two minutes later.
Both Jones and Chambost are poised to play pivotal roles for the Columbus Crew as the season progresses. Jones, as a left wing back, will be crucial in both defense and attack, bringing speed, versatility, and a relentless work rate to Wilfried Nancy’s system. His ability to contribute in the final third while maintaining defensive solidity will be essential in the Crew’s push for silverware.
Chambost, as an attacking playmaker, will be tasked with unlocking defenses and creating opportunities for his teammates. His vision and creativity in the midfield are expected to elevate the team’s offensive play, making him a key figure in Columbus’s quest for continued success.
We saw glimpses of their potential Friday night, with Jones immediately making his presence felt by scoring within seconds of his debut and Chambost showcasing his playmaking ability, along with a goal, being at the right spot at the right time. These performances hint at the significant impact they could have as the Crew navigates the rest of the season, both in MLS and the Leagues Cup play.
Next up for the Black & Gold in the Leagues Cup is a Round of 16 clash against Inter Miami, who will be without Lionel Messi. Miami advanced after a thrilling 4-3 win over Toronto, showcasing their attack but also defensive frailties. Jordi Alba will be the key threat for Miami, having notched all four assists in their match against Toronto, directly contributing to every one of their goals. The match will take place at LDC Field in Columbus on Tuesday, where the Crew will look to beat the Conference, and Supporter Shield leaders.
