Another week, another day on top of the world for the Columbus Crew.
Earlier this week, MLS released its usual weekly power rankings to see where the league is currently shaking out. For a while now, the Crew has been in the mix for the top three spots, bouncing around from the No. 1 spot a few times now. However, yet again, they claim the first-place position after an incredible week of league play.
On Wednesday, Aug. 28, the Crew took to the road to take on the Philadelphia Union, whom they dominated through 90 minutes. While the scoreline only showed a one-goal differential, 1-0, the Crew rested their starters and pulled their reserves into the starting lineup. The changes came after the Leagues Cup tournament, where Columbus was able to take home silverware in the championship game.
Due to the longwinded tournament in the middle of the regular season, Head Coach Wilfried Nancy has had to rely upon his depth to get more playing time to give his stars much-needed rest. Even though the substitutes were at the helm, they were able to pull off a win and keep the Crew's win streak alive.
Unfortunately for the Crew, they were unable to catch their breath as just a few days later they paid host to New York City FC at home. At the time, NYCFC was a the top of their game and through 90 minutes, the score was level, 2-2.
Well, it WAS tied, until recent signing DeJuan Jones timed a perfect run to score his first MLS goal for the Crew. His goal put the Crew up 3-2, before a goal from youngster Jacen Russell-Rowe sealed the game shut.
Even though the Crew have had to look at several new faces to step into big moments in recent months, the consistency on the pitch has not waivered one bit. Heading into Saturday's matchup against the Seattle Sounders, the Black & Gold are riding an eight-game winning streak.
Since June 1, the Crew have only lost three games and drawn one, standing out as one of the teams to beat moving down the stretch of the 2024 MLS regular season. After the game against the Sounders, Columbus will battle in the Hell is Real Derby against Cincinnati FC the following weekend.
