Where is Sean Zawadzki?

Kyle Robertson/Columbus Dispatch / USA

Where is Sean Zawadzki? Oh, he’s not lost. I don’t man anything like that. I ask that question because you never quite know where he’s going to line up.

He’s here, he’s there, he’s…

If you’re a Ted Lasso fan, you know the rest. Zawadzki does seem to be just about everywhere lately. In the Crew’s last four games, he has started at four different positions-left and center back, plus left wing and in the center of midfield. This versatility is a luxury for head coach Wilfried Nancy, who can move Zawadzki to multiple positions during a game. It’s a versatility that comes from Nancy moving Zawadzki, a midfielder, to the back line due to injuries and a lack of depth there. Although things didn’t always go smoothly, Nancy’s decision to stick with Zawadzki on the back end is now paying dividends.

A Slow Start, A Quick Ascension

Zawadzki has appeared in 30 games this season and started fifteen. Not bad for someone who had just one start in the Crew’s first fifteen games and was mostly known for being the guy who scored the game-tying goal against New England back in April. He’s gone from a young bench player to trusted starter in a very short time. The Olmsted Falls, Ohio native had three goals this season, but his contribution to the Crew can’t be measured in statistics. Zawadzki’s worth comes in the form of his versatility and the confidence that he will give the club a solid performance each game. Where is Sean Zawadzki? Anywhere Wilfried Nancy wants to put him.

I fully admit Zawadzki has turned into one of my favorite players. Here was a young guy thrown into a difficult situation and he never flinched-just kept working and improving. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching his development and progress in 2023.
