Leagues Cup 2024 is set to commence again this summer, as the month-long competition sees fans from the MLS and Liga MX lock horns in an absolutely exhilarating and fun spectacle. Fans of Columbus Crew will certainly be looking forward to the competition, but fans may be wondering why they weren't as involved in the group stage draw.
Why don't Columbus Crew have a group for Leagues Cup 2024?
Well, the answer is simple and it's an answer that will actually flatter Columbus Crew fans more than anything. The reason is, Columbus Crew will receive an automatic buy into the Round of 32 stage of Leagues Cup 2024. Indeed, this was confirmed by MLS.
Columbus Crew are one of two teams to receive automatic qualification for the Round of 32 stage and it comes as a result of their hard-fought MLS Cup 2023 win, where they merged victorious over LAFC. It won't take much to remind fans of the Crew, who I'm sure can remember exactly where they were when their side scored two quick-fire goals against LAFC right before the first interval.
Alongside the Crew, Liga MX giants Club América will also receive a buy into the Round of 32 innings. This is because Club América won Liga MX last time out.
How did Columbus Crew fare in Leagues Cup 2023?
Due to the automatic qualification, Columbus Crew fans will hope they perform better and go further than they did in Leagues Cup 2023. Last year, the Crew were knocked out at the Round of 32 stage in a heartbreaking manner, losing on penalties to Minnesota United after an incredible 3-3 goal-fest. Certainly, we can expect the same entertainment in this years Leagues cup.
